On the Vermillion River

Photo Remix by Paul Smedberg

The Vermillion River in Eastern Illinois was the setting for a two-day canoe trip with my friend Brian. Usually these trips involve long periods of effortless cartwheeling down the river, staring slack-jawed at the beautiful spring. This time, we had picked a particularly long stretch of river and wanted to make good progress on the first day. As evening approached, we started looking for a place to camp. We round a curve in the river, and there, off to the left, was the take-out point. We had traversed two-days worth of canoeing in a single day.

My take-away from this voyage is:  Stop working so hard. Procrastination, slack and effortless sloth are their own rich reward.
