The Goat Bird . . .

They eats plastic

and fly with this dipping, scalloped path

up and down like waves

with each wing flap,

and you keep thinking

that they’re going to hit something

and sometimes they do,

and often what they hit is something plastic

and it’s just another eating opportunity

for them.

The little beard

the weird tail

fluffy white wings.

Those damn genetic engineering interns

just built one on a lark.

Made it code for a pregnant female from birth.

Now goatbirds are everywhere.

They don’t need to mate because they’re born pregnant.

They’re filling up all the parking lots

and rooftops

and suburban lawns.

Fortunately, they’re all dying.

Unfortunately, they all smell.
