Don’t Tread On Me

Flag Assemblage by Paul Smedberg

I’ve been watching West Wing on DVD.

Sam has the “Don’t Tread On Me” flag in his office. It’s sometimes called the Culpepper flag or First Navy Jack, and it celebrates that great “Fuck Off – Leave Me Alone” spirit that so imbued early America. Here above is my take.

Ben Franklin was reputed to have said of the rattlesnake: “She never begins an attack, nor, when once engaged, ever surrenders: She is therefore an emblem of magnanimity and true courage. … she never wounds ’till she has generously given notice, even to her enemy, and cautioned him against the danger of treading on her.”
